In March 1968, it was released as a mono single, backed with The Inner Light. The song was recorded on 3 and 6 February 1968 before the Beatles left for India, and its rhythm and blues-inspired style signalled a more conventional approach to writing and recording for the group following the psychedelic experimentation of the previous two years. The Inner Light is a song written by George Harrison that was first released by The Beatles as a B-side to Lady Madonna. It was the first ever Harrison composition to be featured on a Beatles single. The lyrics are a rendering of Chapter 47 in the Laozi's tao te ching, the foundational book of Taoism. It is also available on the Beatles' compilation albums Rarities and Past Masters, Volume Two.
