He conducted them for nearly half a century, introducing hundreds of new works to British audiences. After his death, the concerts were officially renamed in his honour as the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts, although they continued to be generally referred to as the Proms. It is a far cry back to 1888, when young Henry Joseph Wood first publicly ruled by his baton and, as he told me, earned the enormous sum of two guineas for conducting at a church choral society concert. He has conducted nearly 3,000 Promenade Concerts - he is now in his forty-fourth season at the Queens Hall - nearly 1,000 Sunday concert
