American pianist William Kapell's life was cut short when he died in a plane crash in 1953. But what he was able to do in his short career is impressive. Known for his style and flash as well as his good looks, he his featured in a full CD featuring Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2 as well as short solo piano works by Liszt, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. There are ten dinky dances by Schubert, plus one impromptu a short romance by Schumann a tender little intermezzo by Brahms and three super-duper virtuoso pieces by Liszt. Maybe the Liszt is the disc's pièce de résistance, and maybe Kapell's performances are of the transcendental variety of virtuosity but Kapell's interpretations of the Schubert dances are truly transcendental. He takes tiny little pieces and turns them into works of sublime genius and that's what's the hubbub, bub. The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B major, Op. 83, by Johannes Brahms is separated by a gap of 22 years from his first piano concerto. Brahms began work on the piece in 1878 and completed it in 1881 while in Pressbaum near Vienna. It took him three years to work on this concerto which indicates that he was always self-critical. He wrote to Clara Schumann: I want to tell you that I have written a very small piano concerto with a very small and pretty scherzo. Ironically, he was describing a huge piece.
