Album

Koussevitsky's famous commission for the Concerto for orchestra was due in large part to Reiner's advocacy, and he was among the first conductors to both perform and record this masterpiece. He goes under the dazzling surface to touch the tragic core of the work and draws a deeply moving performance from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I had read about the Concerto for orchestra Fritz Reiner did with the Chicago Symphony in 1955 for a long time and finally got around to listening to it. I found that it lived up to expectations. Reiners interpretation involves choices and his Concerto and Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste accentuates certain dimensions of the pieces, while less focused on things like textural effects. To take one example, the famous opening Andante of the Music for Strings is nice, but doesnt have the lush sound that Ive heard, say in the Leonard Bernstein version done with the NY Philharmonic. And some of the large-scale building of momentum is sacrificed to in-the-moment emotion. Liner Notes Irving Kolodin. Orchestra Chicago Symphony Orchestra . Producer Richard Mohr.
